Many people wonder how to store coffee beans to keep their flavor as long as possible. Coffee beans are a fresh product and can quickly lose their aroma if they are stored incorrectly.
With proper storage, however, you can preserve the flavor and quality of your coffee much longer. In this guide, we explain how to store coffee beans at home and which common mistakes to avoid.
Once coffee is roasted, the beans slowly begin to lose their aromas. This process happens naturally, but it becomes much faster if the coffee is exposed to the wrong environment.
Four factors have the biggest impact on coffee quality:
air
light
heat
moisture
If coffee beans are exposed to these elements for too long, the flavor can quickly become flat and less aromatic.
The best way to store coffee is in an airtight container in a dark and cool place.
Good options include:
an airtight coffee container
a tightly sealed glass or metal jar
the original coffee bag if it has a valve and zip seal
Place the container in a kitchen cabinet or pantry where the temperature is relatively stable.
One container that is especially popular among coffee enthusiasts is the Airscape® storage container. It has a special inner lid that pushes the air out of the container, helping to preserve the coffee’s aroma for longer.

As a general guideline:
whole beans: best within 2–4 weeks after roasting
ground coffee: best within 1–2 weeks

→ ground coffee loses aroma much faster than whole beans.
By avoiding these mistakes, you can preserve the flavor of your coffee much longer.
