Coffee Guide: How much coffee per cup?

Coffee guide: How much coffee per cup or litre of water?

How much coffee should you use to get a well-balanced cup?

Too little coffee can result in a thin and weak taste, while too much coffee can make the cup heavy and bitter.

Using the right amount of coffee helps bring out more of the coffee’s aromas and creates a better balance in the flavour.

A simple rule of thumb

A good starting point is:

60 grams of coffee per litre of water

or

15 grams of coffee per cup (250 ml)

This works well for most types of filter coffee.

If you want to go deeper, you can also read our guide on grind size, which also affects the taste.

How many grams of coffee is one coffee scoop?

Not everyone has a scale at home – many people use coffee scoops or tablespoons instead.

Approximate measurements:

1 coffee scoop ≈ 7–8 grams of coffee
1 tablespoon ≈ 5–6 grams of coffee

This equals roughly:

2 coffee scoops per cup
or
8 coffee scoops per litre of water

Since the size of spoons and scoops can vary, it can be helpful to weigh your own scoop once.

Fill your scoop with coffee and weigh it – this way you know exactly how much coffee your scoop holds.

Once you know that, it becomes easier to get the same result every time.

Filter coffee or French press?

Different brewing methods can work best with slightly different amounts of coffee.

Filter coffee
→ about 60 g per litre of water
→ gives a balanced cup

You can also read our pour over coffee guide if you want to learn more about this brewing method.

French press
→ slightly more coffee, about 65–70 g per litre
→ gives a fuller body and more intensity

Do you need to weigh your coffee?

Using a scale gives the most precise results and makes it easier to achieve the same taste every time.

However, a coffee scoop also works well once you have found an amount that suits your taste.

Taste is personal

If you prefer stronger coffee, you can use a little more coffee.

If you prefer milder coffee, you can use a little less.

Small adjustments often make a big difference in the cup.
