Discover a coffee where tradition meets innovation – a journey of passion, sustainability, and craftsmanship.
Kenya Gikirima comes from the Gikirima Factory, part of the Kibugu Farmers Cooperative Society (FCS) in Embu County, near Gicherori Town on the southeastern slopes of Mount Kenya. Here, coffee grows in rich volcanic soils, surrounded by clean rivers and lush landscapes – the perfect environment for top-quality specialty coffee.
At Gikirima, every cherry is handpicked early in the morning, carefully sorted in the afternoon sun, and processed using the traditional fully-washed method with river water and hand-guided channels. Only the heaviest, highest-quality beans are selected, before being gently dried on raised beds under close supervision.
Environmental responsibility and community are central: wastewater is treated before release, and local trees and birdlife are actively protected. The Gikirima Factory combines quality, environmental awareness, and cooperative work – making every cup not only taste outstanding, but also fully traceable and ethically produced.
Did you know that coffee can also contain umami notes? Umami is sometimes called the “fifth taste,” alongside sweet, sour, salty, and bitter – a savoury, rounded flavour often associated with sun-dried tomatoes, mushrooms, or aged cheeses.
In coffee, umami doesn’t come from high levels of glutamates but from complex aromas and aftertastes that create a deeper and more balanced cup. The subtle note of sun-dried tomato in Kenya Gikirima is a great example of how umami can shine through – giving the coffee an extra layer of body and complexity.
