Mount Elgon, an extinct volcano on the border with Kenya, is one of Uganda’s most prominent coffee-growing areas. The combination of high altitude, microclimates, and fertile volcanic soils creates ideal conditions for Arabica coffee. The region’s coffee thrives in natural shade, with abundant rainfall and fertile soil, giving the beans balance, complexity, and body.
The Kapchorwa area, located at high altitude, is characterized by heavy rainfall and limited direct sunlight. Only ripe cherries are harvested and carefully dried on raised beds before further processing. The Kyagalanyi Mount Elgon project engages thousands of smallholder farmers, providing training in sustainable, climate-resilient farming as well as social and environmental initiatives.
